Outlander
by Diana Gabaldon
Well, I did it. I read all 850 pages and the first 600 or so I really enjoyed. I haven't been in a very romantic mood these days so I'm sure that colored my opinion but there were craft issues that made me want to throw the book across the room. 1. Claire is an unwilling time traveler so her actions are propelled by her desire to get back to her own time. 2. Once she is given the ability to go back to her own time she chooses not to. That's fine, end the book. 3. The last 200 pages of the book felt very willy nilly...Now she's the lady of the mansion, now she wants a baby, now there is yet another attack, now we need to save Jamie, now we need to heal Jamie. The entire ending was just too episodic and for me. 4. I wasn't thrilled that homosexuals were portrayed as sadists and pedophiles. Certainly I don't expect any gay people in 1743 to be waving rainbow flags but why represent gay people at all if you only make them the bad guy?
What I loved? Claire's nursing skills transplanted and respected, Jamie's intelligence, an inside look at Scottish highland customs.
