If the first part of this story was the whole book, I probably would have given this 4 stars. The opening completely pulled me in and I fell in love with June and Mick's love story, and my heart broke as it unraveled. There is a strong sense of foreshadowing and tension that makes you know something bad is coming.
The book is beautifully written and explores family relationships, grief, self-identity, and the complicated legacies parents can leave their children. I really resonated with the experience of grieving the loss of a father who is still alive and TJR captures that heartbreak so well.
Unfortunately, I found myself detaching from the story in the second half. While the atmosphere and relationships stayed strong, the vulgarity and detailed descriptions of drug use/sex took me out of it and at times, seemed completely unnecessary. This story was not life-changing for me, but was moving story that balances beauty with heartbreak
