13 Treasures by Michelle Harrison
4.0
Tanya is a young girl with a secret that she tries to hide but wants to tell. She can see fairies, and not just any fairies but cruel ones who punish her when they discover that she's been writing about them in a diary. Their punishments can be violent and destructive, and their last attack leaves Tanya in a lot of trouble with her mother. Once her mother finally feels she's become too much to handle, especially since she has no idea what's really going on with her daughter, Tanya is sent to live with her grandmother at Elvesden Manor.
Any relief Tanya might have hoped to have at her grandmother's is shattered by the presence of fairies all over the place. As Tanya interacts with the magical creatures around and within the manor, she becomes embroiled in a mystery she feels compelled to solve.
For a debut, The Thirteen Treasures isn't half bad. I thought the writing style was crisp and flowed well. Likewise, characters are well-developed and three-dimensional. I especially liked Tanya's cousin, Fabian.
This is a really imaginative story. I would say that the plot, once considered away from the writing, leaves a little wanting - or maybe I should say plots, as there is the one main plot and a few side plots. I wasn't too crazy about the situation with Red and her appearances in the story, but this dislike was overshadowed by other elements of the story that I enjoyed, mainly the author's writing.
Michelle Harrison is definitely an author to watch, and I hope to continue this series.
