violentoceans 's review for:

3.0

I have mixed feelings about this book. They are as follows:

Cons
1. Jack Sparks is an unreliable narrator. I'm not a fan of unreliable narrators.
2. I suspect his brother, Alistair, is also an unreliable narrator.
3. It's more horror than anything else, and I'm not a fan of horror.
4. Jack Sparks is fairly unlikeable.
5. Alistair seems equally unlikeable.

Pros
1. The story did keep me guessing far longer than I thought it would.
2. Despite the aforementioned cons, the story was very readable, even for someone who doesn't like the bulk of the style choices made by the author
3. The story ties up just enough of the loose endings to make you feel like Arnopp didn't cop out at the ending, while still leaving enough questions to keep you pondering.
4. In that same vein, it was really well plotted. Probably one of the best plotted books I've read in terms of suspense/mystery.

Having said all that, I would definitely be open to reading more of Arnopp's stuff in the future.
