Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

went into Where the Crawdads Sing expecting to be swept away by the nature writing and the story of Kya growing up in the marsh, but I ended up feeling a little let down. While the descriptions of the natural world are vivid and beautiful, the characters themselves felt flat and the dialogue often clunky. The plot relies heavily on sensationalized elements like murder and court drama which really overshadow Kya’s personal journey and growth as a naturalist.

The book also touches on race and class, but it does so in a very surface-level way, leaving important aspects feeling underdeveloped. Despite these issues, I did enjoy the quiet moments of Kya exploring the marsh and developing her understanding of the natural world. Overall, it’s a story with some beautiful passages, but it falls short of the depth I hoped for.
