The average rating on this book is a travesty. I had to stop reading it so many times because it is TOO GOOD. Thomas uses the perfect vocabulary to evoke specific feelings in the reader. It is a retelling of an old fairy tale, but it's more robust in the retelling and not hackneyed or clichéd. The characters are full and imperfect and human, and the mistakes they make *make sense* for who they are.

The end wrapped up quickly, but that is a tiny complaint. This book should be on Top Ten Historical lists all over the place. I'm mad I didn't read it sooner.
