The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende

This book has so many parts and pieces that leave me both disgusted and repulsed, but next to them are shining stories of love and passion and life. It holds back nothing in its descriptions of war, the evils of power-hungry folks, and more. If you told me it was written in 2016 or 2020 I would have believed it — there are powerful examples that we could learn from this epoch even today. The sprinkle of magical realism and the larger plot lines Allende draws remind us readers of joy, love, hope, and the resilience of folks who believe through their efforts they can improve their country and the lives of those around them.
