The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae
4.5
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. It gave me so much insight into Issa Rae’s life, and I learned things I didn’t know before. For instance, her Senegalese heritage, the fact that her father is Senegalese, and her ability to speak French, which she grew up speaking, were fascinating to discover.
Many of her experiences resonated deeply with me. The chapter about corruption in Senegal, especially how police officers accept bribes, hit close to home. Her struggle with her hair texture, which differed from her mother’s, was so relatable, as were her experiences of bullying in school. Even her stories about workplace relationships, particularly the passive-aggressive dynamics with middle-aged white women, were painfully accurate yet hilarious.
I loved seeing how elements of her life inspired her hit show Insecure. Her wit and comedic voice shine throughout the book, and I laughed out loud more times than I can count. It’s a perfect blend of humour and heartfelt honesty.
I’d give this book 4.5 stars—funny, relatable, and a great read overall!
