The Troop by Nick Cutter

Did not finish book. Stopped at 35%.
*disclaimer* English is my second language. *disclaimer*

if i could i would give it a 2/5

reasons why i dnf:

  •  the gore/the horror/the gross stuff felt too... 'me, age 16, trying to write horror for the very first time'. repeating the same thing over and over again to the point where it became stale, and felt more that it was just there for the pure shock factor than anything else was not fun to read.
  •  it felt like the author was rushing to check off plot point after plot point, as fast as possible. one after another after another after... yeah. there were so many scenes where i feel like we should've stopped, contemplated even for a page or god pls at least a paragraph or two. i'm here for the horror, but can we slow down for a minute?  maybe it was intentional, however, I guess it just wasn't for me, so after one last rushed transition from one thing to another i decided to stop, as i've already was pushing myself through this book.

two positives that saves it from one star:
  1.  the premise is actually interesting, and I would've loved to read it, if it was handled differently.
  2. the epistolary parts (at least the ones that I've managed to read before i gave up) were a delight, but that might be because i'm quite biased toward that form. maybe if this  book was written this way this review would've been different, but then, it would've been a very different book.
