A truly great exploration of the medieval imagination. As a piece of historical fiction, it never felt like a modern perspective on historical events, but rather like an earnest attempt to show the world through the eyes of people at the time, even if it must be done through lies. After all, those lies make up reality just as much as they twist it.

Maybe this was not as good as The Name of the Rose, but I liked it more. It's a messier book, but you can see how much fun Eco had with it and I was happy to come along for the ride.
