3.5 stars. I rated as a 4 immediately after finishing, then dropped it to a 3 after sitting on it for a few days, and now I guess I'll split the difference.
I wanted to love this! And there are parts of it I do love, especially as an unabashed Drarry shipper. The dynamic between Simon and Baz is the perfect amount of hate to love/love to hate angst that I die for, BUT . . . Man, I really wish all the history of Simon's past exploits had been given a few books of their own to develop and breathe before we got to this point in the story. 90% of my issues with this book boil down to feeling like I'm being told all this neat stuff that happened, but I don't really get to see any of it. Super frustrating. I totally feel like this should have been the third (or at least second) book in a series.
I do love all of the characters in this novel very much! Penny especially was a highlight. And I think the magic system is neat even if it borders on goofy at times. Certain aspects of the plot were a little predictable, but I thought the mysterious antagonist was really unique and the overall resolution of the novel was well done.
