Sabrina & Corina
by Kali Fajardo-Anstine
Possibly my favorite read so far this year? And it's June when I'm writing this so damn. I think I'm starting to like short stories more and more as I continue to read a variety of genres (is short stories a genre?). What really impresses me with them is just how much feeling and character you can get from so few pages. The skill it takes to write so cohesively and still make that kind of impact is so inspiring. Brevity has never been my strong suit so I greatly admire authors who can express so much so cleanly. I can't tell you any names of any characters, but I can tell you (*spoilers*) a girl does the burial make-up for her dead cousin's corpse, another girl loses her eyesight after a date gone wrong, and a little boy falls in love with reading. Writing this makes me want to reread some of these. Loved it!
