On the Hustle by Adriana Herrera

3.0

3.5, could have maybe done a 4 depending on my mood.

This was a fun, super steamy romp that I devoured. It had a likeable heroine full of personality and spunk and drive and a hero that was essentially perfect? I mean he's a former OLYMPIC SWIMMER, an MIT GRAD, RICH, 6' 3", REAL generous AND bossy in bed, gets along GREAT with your friends, did I mention how he's bossy in bed????? I hazard to say he was TOO perfect, tbh. At first, he was painted as this angsty, tightly controlled, grumpy guy (my bread and butter), but literally within 2 chapters he was extremely flirty and not at all what I would call "controlled" lmao. I wish Herrera had toned him down a bit as a more compelling contrast to Alba.

Speaking of toning things down, while the steam was honestly impeccable and Very Dirty and Good, with the voice-driven narration from both sides (this unfortunately was my least favorite POV - dual and first person), it occasionally just became too much for me. Essentially, our man Theo is obsessed with our girl Alba's butt. We love to see it. But what I don't love so much...is to hear it. Both his interior monologues and spoken dialogue go on and on about her "delicious rump" (shudder), her "perfect peach" (no), etc, etc. It was those little moments that took me out of the story. I just really don't believe that a no-nonsense MIT grad is using the word "rump" (and if he is, he should NOT be).

This is a book that has tons of pop culture references and slang ("XX understood the assignment!!") so if you don't like that, which I know some find cringe, you might also find this whole thing cringe.

By no means is this the sweeping, lyrical all-consuming angsty steam fest that I would give 5 stars to, BUT I thoroughly enjoyed the 6 hours it took me to read it, and I will also enjoy re-reading the filth I bookmarked.
