Committed: On Meaning and Madwomen by Suzanne Scanlon

3.0

I confess, I stopped reading at page 270. It's a very unusual memoir in that it's not trying to tell any real story. This book is made up of snippets of ideas, memories, and observations all detailed in flowery prose. It's more of a musing collection of essays than a memoir.

I enjoyed that for the first 100 pages. It felt very literary and intellectual but then it just kept going without any real narrative arc. I think this would have been lovely if it was shorter or if the essays were arranged to tell a story. I had to stop reading it because I was beginning to hate it and I wanted to like this very badly. If I had continued to the end, it probably would get a lower rating.
