Such an important read that reflects upon one very long, very important day in 10 year old Maya's life. It begins as she gets ready for school, leaving their homeless shelter to walk to the bus on her own for the first time so that her mother can attend a job interview. Her father is in the hospital in severe unconscious condition. It follows Maya's minutes and hours throughout the day as she navigates going to school, tries to pretend everything is normal, struggles to focus without food in her belly, has difficulty relating to her peers and their privileges, opens up to trusted teachers, and ultimately ends the day in a positive, relieving way. This was vital in breaking down exactly how homelessness affects every aspect of a child's life, every minute of their day, and every moment of their minds. Maya's perspective was accessible and emotional, and her love for her family was so evident and strong.
