Blue Pills: A Positive Love Story by Frederik Peeters

4.0

I looked for this title because it was mentioned in [b:French Milk|1574310|French Milk|Lucy Knisley|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1185378739s/1574310.jpg|1567032] by [a:Lucy Knisley|731384|Lucy Knisley|http://www.goodreads.com/images/nophoto/nophoto-F-50x66.jpg]. At the time, she bought it in the original language. This really is lovely. The translation is a little bit rough (I was kinda excited to be able to identify that as the problem), but the illustration is just gorgeous. Very [a:Craig Thompson|1221698|Neil Gaiman|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1234150163p2/1221698.jpg] with a different philosophical approach. These are slices of musing by the author about his relationship with an H.I.V. positive woman with an H.I.V. positive child. There is a bit of detail about the technicalities and specific risk factors in such a relationship, but it's a real mix of that, anecdotes, and internal thought. Just lovely. Besides the translation issues, though, I wish Peeters had worked it up just a bit more to make it hang together as more of a story. It's SO close to a masterpiece, I want to see it get there. But it's certainly not chopped liver.
