Elmet by Fiona Mozley

It is for this kind of book that I most appreciate the Man Booker prize. It is a novel that I never would have discovered otherwise (my copy is an import as I could not find a copy locally). It offers a unique voice by a debut novelist. While I thought other books on the shortlist were objectively better. I am kind of rooting for this one to take the prize. It’s by no means a perfect novel, and one may quibble with its inconsistent narrator voice and brutal turns that are a bit over the top towards the end, but it remains a wonderful and affecting read regardless.
