This story was not what I was expecting. Based on interviews and blurbs, I assumed this would be more of a mystery. There are two murders, both of which are unraveled during the course of the book, but this does not fit the bill of a mystery at all.
It's really a deep dive into grief. We study grief through the eyes of Avery, her mom, and her grandma. The author did a great job of capturing the different perspectives one gains as they grow older.
I'm not sure I would have enjoyed this as a teen. It's at times too "real" and emotionally spot-on to be comfortable or enjoyable reading.
