Five stars, magnificent.
The Raven Scholar combines soo many things I love:
- smart fmc who acts her profession (pedantic scholar) and age (THIRTY-FOUR!!),
- morally complex characters that make the world feel alive with real people,
- intriguing character arcs,
- mature but refreshing romance subplot,
- meaningful friendships and enraging rivalries,
- queer normative,
- twists I actually did not see coming (a murder mystery that fooled me several times??),
- political scheming with a massive scope,
- themes about forgiveness, guilt, honor, corrupting power, classism, and nepotism,
- actual laugh-out-loud situations and dialogue,
- while not being afraid to get dark, heavy, and even gory,
- unique things happening with the narration and perspective,
- deadly competition for the throne,
- animal companions,
AND SO MUCH MORE.
Hodgson somehow crawled inside my ribcage and wrote this book specifically for me, like a true Raven fragment.
The Raven Scholar is set to publish on April 15, 2025, and is the first book in a planned trilogy, The Eternal Path Trilogy.
