Instructions for Dancing
by Nicola Yoon
Evie is cynical about love after her Dad betrays his family by having an affair and leaving. She receives a power to see the ending of peoples’ relationships when she watches them kiss.
She goes in search of an explanation and lands at a dance studio, where she meets X. He’s a musician who lost his best friend, and he’s decided to live a full life in the moment.
I get the philosophy of carpe diem. I also get the idea of saying yes to things, and valuing the love you have. The part that bothers me is that the end is still part of the story. The love and hurt remain, it’s time that runs out.
For Evie, the love of her life is short lived, and it’s heartbreaking to read about. Its not what I hoped, the magic somehow reversing, there being more. I was disappointed in this fiction that brought only harsh truth.
