The Aeneid by Virgil
4.0

okay, so i don't know if i'm even allowed to review this, since i didn't technically read it cover to cover (i read books 2, 4, and 6 for a school assignment). having read ovid's work earlier in the summer and inferno in the fall, i was pretty curious to see what this virgil guy is all about. From the parts I read (the fall of troy, dido's marriage to aeneas and then suicide, and aeneas' journey into the underworld), i can say that virgil doesn't quite have the dry wit of ovid or the insanely cool world-building of dante, but he makes up for both in gravitas. the last few passages at the end of book four (dido's book) are just so haunting in the best way. i can see why dante and ovid were a fan. also cool to see the parallels dante included in his work to book 6. i can't say that aeneas as a character was really memorable, honestly. though i would love a whole epic on dido. I'm kind of bummed i don't have time to finish the whole thing this summer, but I'm hoping to read it a second time all the way through in the fall :))
