The Butterfly Garden   by Dot Hutchison
2.5
dark medium-paced

Rating: 2.5/5 Stars

I picked up The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchison after seeing its high rating on Goodreads, but it took me two attempts to finish it. The first time, I couldn’t connect with the story or the writing style, and even on this second attempt, I struggled to fully engage.

This book delves into extremely dark and disturbing themes, including murder, rape, child abduction, and molestation. It’s undeniably a tough read, and I would strongly advise checking trigger warnings before starting. The story focuses on the brutality the women endure and the bonds they form amidst their suffering, but the darkness of the subject matter can be overwhelming.

Hutchison’s writing is descriptive, and the pacing is moderate, but the story didn’t captivate me enough to make up for its bleakness. While some readers might appreciate the psychological depth, it ultimately wasn’t for me.

I’m not planning to continue the series, as this book didn’t leave me curious about what comes next. If you enjoy dark thrillers and can handle heavy content, you might want to give this one a try. Otherwise, I’d recommend skipping it.
