King's Dragon by Kate Elliott
3.0

I have mixed feelings about this book…It would have gotten 2 stars, but it was saved by the author’s compelling writing style. I felt connected with the characters (mostly Liath) and could picture the world the author built. However, I wasn’t a huge fan of the plot. It takes about 200 pages for the book to really pick up, but even then, I found I was forcing myself to finish it. Except for a richly detailed and intriguing scene at the beginning of the book, the Alain storyline also wasn’t as interesting as the Liath storyline. I also didn’t like how much the world reflected the middle ages. I understand a lot of fantasy is based off of medieval times, but this was too much for my taste, especially with the strong parallels to medieval Christianity. Probably won’t be reading any more books in the series.
