After learning of the correspondences on which this novella is based, I simply cannot give Le Fanu's incomplete version of the story five stars. Nevertheless, it is an enjoyable read, and if you're interested in the history of queer desire—in particular, its erasure from literary history—I highly recommend Carmen Machado's edition.
