Perkins-Valdez does not shy away from the hard stuff in this heartbreaking novel that explores medical ethics and racism. This book touches on several sensitive topics but the author handles them all gently but firmly, exploring the internal conflict plaguing the characters in this story and the external influences in a way that breaks it down for the readers in an amazingly empathetic way. Beautifully written, evocative, would make a great book for a book club discussion.
