I didn't like this as much as The Goblin Emperor, but that's because The Goblin Emperor is a special book rather than because this is a bad one.
The Witness for the Dead is a fantasy detective story in Addison's delicate style. Think an elven Dashiell Hammett, or a more sedate Dresden Files. Thara Celehar is a fascinating protagonist; the book's best moments are those which offer a glimpse beyond his shield of manners and duty to the emotional wounds he keeps hidden.
I know there's one published sequel with at least one more to come, and I look forward to spending more time with Celehar.
