Eh, I'm not sure I understand the hype. Most of this book just feels bland. The characters don't have much personality, the love triangle (?) lacks tension, the tragic past is generic, and the romantic pairing that gets the focus in this book lacks chemistry... it's just bland. The concept is really fun, though, and I got more into the mystery in the last 25% of the book. I think the lack of depth and execution is the issue here.
The Inheritance Games didn't live up to my expectations, but I'll probably check out the sequel, nevertheless.
