The Warsaw Orphan
by Kelly Rimmer
Opening in 1942, it’s the story of two families fighting to survive in Warsaw under Nazi occupation. A young and sheltered Elzbieta accidentally discovers that her friend and neighbour, Sara has been working to smuggle desperate children out of the Jewish Ghetto. She badgers Sara to allow her to help, and little by little, Elzbieta learns first hand of the horrific situation that exists behind the walls. It is here that Elzbieta meets the Gorka family who are all but starving in their struggle to survive. She forms a strong bond with their teenage son, a young firebrand who will stop at nothing to avenge the Germans for the atrocities they have committed against Warsaw Jews. A book full of strong and sympathetic characters with a heart-breaking plot where the experiences of the people of Poland both during and after WWII are laid bare. A terrific read that's very well written.
