Annie John by Jamaica Kincaid
5.0

The first book I’m diving into this year is Annie John by Jamaica Kincaid, a poignant coming-of-age story set in Antigua that tackles the harsh realities youth often shield us from. One aspect of Annie’s journey that resonates with me deeply is her struggle with the concept of death. It’s a strange, almost surreal experience—the way it doesn’t fully sink in when we hear of someone’s passing, or even when we stand over their coffin or visit their gravestone. The book also explores the feeling of outgrowing spaces we once called home, something I can relate to at the moment. A place that should feel familiar now feels strange. I also love the sense of familiarity the book brings, as many of Annie’s childhood experiences mirror my own, as well as those of my family. The writing is beautiful, and revisiting it now, with a bit more life experience, I find myself appreciating it even more.
