The Tea Planter's Wife by Dinah Jefferies
5.0

This is an amazing book - I listened to it as a Kobo audio book and loved every minute of it. I was so engrossed listening to this story unfold.

Gwendolyn (Gwen) Hooper is a young 19 year old who fell in love with a 37 year old widower from Ceylon. Lawrence lost his wife to a horrible tradgide and didn't feel he would love again, then he met Gwen.

To Gwen the moment she met Lawrence she knew he was the 'one'. Because of her love for him once married she Traveled to Ceylon to be with him on his tea plantation. With the determination to become the best wife and mother she could be. But Ceylon is not quite what Gwen expected.

She became the mother she wanted but there is a secret behind her pregnancy that she tries to keep buried forever but after time this secret comes to the light. And the outcome is not as drastic as Gwen thought it would be! Gwen thought that she had been unfaithful to her husband but didn't know for sure until her cousin Fran helped her understand that unfaithfulness wasn't what could have happened at all. Later talking to her husband she was able to come to terms with everything that had happened.

This secret slowly had started to eat Gwen inside and we follow her journey throughout this. It is an amazing story, not only do we follow the journey. We also learn about Ceylon and some of the traditions they hold. We learn about life on the plantation in the 1920s - the workers are resentful and trying to fight 'the man' so to speak.' We learn about some of the trying times that went on within India and Ceylon at these times.

There are many clues to the past which Gwen finds when she first moves to the plantation and she tries to piece them together, but unable to she tries to discuss them with his husband and to start with he refuses but over time and longer together he slowly divulges these secrets and trusts Gwen with all of his secrets.

After a tragic incident towards the end of the book we see Gwen and Lawrence finally become 100% honest with each other and all the secrets shared between them! And the love for each other keep them together!

A tale of love, secrets, tragedy, heartbreak, motherhood, plantation work and travel.
