Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty

5.0

This book was just bloody brilliant. I listened to it on Spotify, masterfully narrated in such a lively manner by Caroline Lee.

In my opinion, Liane Moriarty shouldn’t be dismissed as “chick lit” (not that literature enjoyed by women should ever be dismissed) because she is really a master of her craft- drawing the most lifelike, multidimensional, and completely believable characters who you recognise instantly in so many people you know.

Apples Never Fall is a mystery novel but it is really a novel about family, about the secrets we bury to keep the very same peace that eventually shatters under the weight of all the things we have not said. It is about siblings, and parenting, and I felt I glimpsed into my mother’s mind, into the mind of all mothers, through the central character of Joy. It is full of the most simply stated truths, and the most casually delivered insights, that Moriarty makes creating a family that seem as real as your own look like an easy feat.

This book is funny, light, deep, and above all just thoroughly enjoyable. I recommend it to anyone who has ever had a family.
