morci 's review for:
Low, Volume 1: The Delirium of Hope
by Rick Remender
well...3.5
first off, let me get my biggest peeve out of the way: why was every single female in bikini wear/naked? like come. on. bros. a fantastical futuristic underwater setting and no female wears any clothes ever? LAZY. it's lazy. world building includes attire. the dude's attire was done, but they barely took the time to draw little triangles over any girl's boobs. It wasn't in your face 'tits and ass' drawings either, totally proportioned etc, but jfc draw something else besides bland bikinis.
*sigh* and yeah yeah, we get it, sucks to be a girl; such a 'man's world' type of comic: No females in positions of power? check. prostitute cameo? check. naked harems, check. excessive use of 'cunt', check. i kept rolling my eyes so hard, i almost found myself in another dimension, jfc.
however. on to the other things i DID like...
I read the first comic and put it down for a week. I had just recently read the duo's collab on Black Science and found the family being ripped apart storyline far too familiar. I was pleasantly surprised with the time jumps throughout the comic when i picked it back up and how it really takes place 10 years later.
I like the setting; I'm a big fan of Bioshock. I would've thought there would've been more aquatic tie ins to their everyday life cuz you could mistake their location for space without any differences, but once they leave the dome, there's a lot more of it introduced.
Having the mom be the main character barely balances out my rant up above, but hell yeah, was I all about Tajo. Besides her stupid bikini, I loved her look and all her rage. The little forward in the beginning expands on the main theme of the story which is a big trait of the mother's. I read it after the fact but I guess that didn't matter.
Lastly, the art was... I felt as if I were staring through smeared glass. A lot of the colors and sketches blend together. Each page features one color and then only has shades of that color. (I got tired of the red/orange/yellow color palet.) It's not bad, but after a while I found myself wishing for a more defined look.
No spoilers, but I'm not sure how I feel about some characters not making it to the end of the comic...if anything, when I came to the end, I got that BUT WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?? feeling so I guess they did something right.
