Gender Queer: A Memoir by Maia Kobabe
4.0
This author uses e/em/eir pronouns. I will try my best to abide by these.
I read this book because it is getting a lot of attention with some recent school censorship issues. While I don't identify with the LGBTQIA+ community, I have friends who are and I try my best to stay as knowledgeable as possible.
To begin, I do not think this book should be censored. I really don't think any book should be censored, but the main reasons this one is is dumb. This book does contain "graphic" images of period blood and sexual situations. With that in mind, I would recommend it more for a mature reader or an older teen reader.
The conversations our author has with eirself about the gender and sexuality eir identify with is important to many young people. Banning a book with also just make it more interesting for students and kids to want to read. I think this graphic novel is very important to anyone looking to make themselves knowledgeable about the community and any friends they have in it.
