This had an interesting premise, but I wasn't very engaged. I also just generally have a hard time with animal death which is talked about throughout a lot of parts of the book. But overall I just wasn't very interested, I wanted a lot more about elephants, not just descriptions of what happened with this guy and this herd, so probably just wasn't for me.
Spoiler: I didn't finish the last chapter due to the description of the animal's death.
