Not the best idea to leave all your most loveable characters behind at home while your MC goes off on sequel adventures with an annoying little boy. But I loved the way the romance was handled (though I wish there was a bit more of it) 


I also personally hate the

mind control stuff

because it gives me the heebie jeebies which left me rushing for a resolution and finding it really dragged on in the middle
