SUMMARY (INCLUDES MILD SPOILERS FOR FIRST BOOK):

The Scholomance (aka: a deadly school of magic where the school is working against the students at every turn and you’re lucky if you make it to see the next day) challenges this years seniors (including El, Orion, Chloe, etc.) in ways that it never has before. Our previous loser and loner, El, finds herself in a completely different position this year as everyone finds out what she is really capable of and comes to realize that she may be the ticket out of the Scholomance.

THOUGHTS

I would have included more in the summary – but I didn’t want to spoil anything!

I am HERE for El. It took me a while to fall in love with her in the first book but Naomi Novik is definitely the queen of character development because now I think she might be one of my favorite characters ever written. I am both so excited for and so devastated for the next book to release and end the series.

The Scholomance is such an amazingly unique series that gives us the crazy dark academia world that none of us knew we needed. I have never read anything quite like this book and hope it buds a bunch more like it in the future.

Pros:
Strong, Consistent, Sassy, Pragmatic Heroine
Beautiful World Building
Strong and Nuanced Side Characters

Cons:
CLIFFHANGER ENDING

Recommended for:
• Fantasy & Dark Academia Readers
• People looking for a pragmatic and sarcastic heroine
• People who love morally grey books
