The Book of Cold Cases by Simone St. James
dark
emotional
mysterious
tense
medium-paced
4.0
this is probably closer to a 3.95 than a 4, but it was really, really enjoyable!
shea is a decent flawed protagonist - she has trauma she's yet to work through, and quirks as a result. they're never grating or too much, they just are, and i think that's a testament to simone st. james' skill because it's so easy to let those things become overwhelming when writing. even though shea is the protagonist, she isn't the star of this story. beth is.
beth is a wonderfully callous and unlikable protagonist that i ended up adoring. she reminded me of evelyn hugo, in a way, but a lot more calculated and reserved. despite all of the jokes about her being cold and heartless, i felt like she did have a heart way down under all the layers of protection she built around herself.
there were a few twists i didn't anticipate and they kept me reading, made me eager to see what happened next - the ending was seriously satisfying, and i just really love simone st. james' writing.
