She Persisted by Chelsea Clinton
3.0
I would rate this book a 3.5 if I could. A good, concise book that I feel should be a part of any girl's library. Let go of any politics regarding the author (pro or con), and examine the book for yourself. If you have any reservations, read it in the bookstore if when you have the chance before deciding to purchase it for your child or another family's (it's a quick read and took me all of 10 minutes).
You'll find several inspirational women selected to be showcased in a concise form set to hopefully inspire the young girl in your life to pursue her passions and not be held to stereotypes that attempt to reduce her capabilities solely based on her sex.
Each notable woman has an inspiring quote to accompany them. My only qualm with the book deals with the quote for Harriet Tubman - it appears the book intentionally misquotes her and does not provide the entire quote. The quote in the book:
"I *SHOULD* fight for my liberty as long as my strength lasted."
The actual quote:
"I *WOULD* fight for my liberty so long as my strength lasted, and if the time came for me to go, the Lord would let them take me."
*emphasis mine*
From my research, the second quote is the only rendition I've seen. I've also checked the quotes for all of the remaining women, and their words were not altered or significantly shortened - so why is Harriet Tubman's? There is enough space on the page to accommodate the full quote, and Claudette Colven (the 7th woman in the book) has a quote that is twice of the altered Tubman quote. Because of this perceived misrepresentation of Tubman's quote led to me round down of my 3.5 star rating.
