Dune by Frank Herbert

Did not finish book. Stopped at 14%.
Abandoned at 100 pages or so.

I could have forgiven the poor writing choices if so many of Frank’s real-world prejudices hadn’t also tainted the experience. Characters’ thoughts clutter the page constantly, spoiling any chance at subtle exposition or meaningful reveals for what motivates them, and the narrative just really, really wants you to know how much Paul is a Special Boy™️. I would have persisted for the world building and plotting (wanted to see the worms...) but I just didn’t have time for the way he writes women, or the imperialist veneer hanging over the whole thing (on which others have written much more detailed and articulate explanations).

What’s in the book?
Pain.
