Story
Solid debut that brings something new to the romantasy genre.
There is a unique magic system where women gain powers through trauma. The story explores themes such as patriarchy, religion, feminine rage, found family, and more.
The story did start to slow, but as it went on, things picked up just a little, but at the same time not a lot, then stayed pretty constant and predictable.
That's not a bad thing, but since it was predictable, it was kind of a boring to read. The ending... I was expecting something else, but it didn't happen. And it was really difficult to pay attention to the whole story. And I am not a fan of main characters.
This wasn't a bad story, and even though it ended in a major cliffhanger, I'm not sure if I want to read the next in the series to be honest.
Audiobook
The narration was performed by Fiona Hardingham and Shea Taylor and was not bad, but not good either, especially when the story itself wasn’t the best. It was difficult to pay attention because of their monotone performance. They both tried their best, but I didn’t feel like it was delivered exceptionally, effortlessly inhabiting each character and using tone and energy to convey inner turmoil, moments of reflection, and self-doubt with vivid clarity. And it was to slow for me.
Thank you Netgalley, Spotify Audiobooks and Taylor Hartley for this ALC.
