I'm still pulling myself together to add this review. This book is an unexpectedly light take on the dark. It breathtakingly runs through so much territory about commitment, family, aging, late sexual awakenings, and this idea of safe spaces of bodily autonomy, creative freedom and grief for midlife women. There's a lot of descriptive tension about being on the brink, whether it's the estrogen cliff, a breakthrough in a marriage, or an emotional breakdown, and explores how much can spiral and grow from a nascent impulse.
It feels like "All Fours" is generously autobiographical, and even without reading about Miranda July, you can sense the honesty in the first pages.
There are moments where the pacing drags, and as you're pulled into the narrator's obsessive thoughts, you're almost guaranteed to move from empathy to annoyance quickly. I think if you can push through, there's a sweet few ending chapters to look forward to.
