Down a Dark Road by Linda Castillo

3.0

I borrowed Down a Dark Road to read on a long weekend, without realizing that it was part of a series. While technically it can be read as a stand-alone, I feel like I would have been able to appreciate it more if I had read the other eight books in the series that preceded it.
I thought the plot was good and Castillo is definitely a great writer. However, for being the Chief of Police Kate Burkholder seems to make a lot of rookie mistakes. While the case/mystery in this book is clearly personal as the suspect was a childhood friend of Kate's, it just seemed to me that Kate was making mistakes that she shouldn't have. I did enjoy the flashbacks to Kate's childhood and her determination to find the truth about her childhood friend.
While I probably would have enjoyed it more if I had read the previous books in the series, I still thought Down a Dark Road was a good read. I will have to check out more of the series soon!
