Allegiant by Veronica Roth
5.0

So I finally finished Allegiant after putting it off. This one took me two days to finish, while I read the previous two books within one day each when they were first released.
I had put it off probably because I was already reading a book at the time and wanted to finish it first before starting a new one. Or probably I just hadn't wanted the trilogy to end yet.
SPOILERS AHEAD

Spoiler
Let me just say that I've already been spoiled by a friend of mine, that Tris is going to die by the end of the novel. But it wasn't enough to prepare me, to soften the blow of Tris' death. It sure didn't stop me from bawling my eyes out for the next hour or so after finishing the novel.

The book started slow for me, which probably contributed to the reason why I put it off, but it got exciting towards the middle as Veronica Roth finally established the GP and GD background.

I like the character developments, every one of them. I love how Veronica Roth created her characters so realistically. They're brilliant and flawed at the same time, just like real people.
I loved how Tris was selfless and brave, and even though she was only sixteen was making smart choices. I knew the moment she asked for Caleb's clean suit that she was going to die, and she did too but she still went for it. It is then that I realized that she deserves to top my list of most badass female characters.
Even though I couldn't believe that Tobias cooperated with Nita, it was within his character to feel strongly about proving people wrong that he was (genetically) damaged - maybe he was emotionally damaged, but he wants to be whole and he finally realizes how that could be achieved towards the end of the novel.
I especially liked Caleb and Peter's character developments. I knew Caleb had it in him to be Tris' big brother again, and I always held hope for Peter to change heart, although in the end he achieved it through serum means.
I also liked reading about Christina and Uriah. I felt sad for Uriah because he was just recovering from his loss and suddenly he's gone. Christina was a big factor in Tobias' "mending", I think. She really developed from a Candor smart-mouth to a true friend.
Evelyn and Johanna were also strong characters, and female ones at that. I love how Roth emphasized women's leadership in her novels.

THE ENDING
I know that the ending is brilliant, but of course I can't help but cry and wonder why Tris had to die. Veronica Roth discusses the ending here. I cried, of course, but I can't help but think that it was a very good ending, a very realistic one. Because people die in revolutionaries, and Tris - and Tobias, and well, everyone in their gang - has been part of many at her (their) young age.
I supposed a fire that burns that bright is not meant to last.
-Tobias

Still, I mourned for Tris.
I don't hate Veronica Roth for the ending, I even love it (if somehow I can fully get over Tris' death and Tobias' grief). I think she's an incredible writer and I thank her for such a great series. I thank her for creating such a good role model for young girls and generally, young people. I thank her for her bits of wisdom ingrained within the text.
