The Outlands by Tyler Edwards

3.75

Bit of a mixed basket. We never even
go to the Outlands :-(

The main character was very annoyingly rash. And then the one time taking action was the right thing to do, he didn't.
I predicted a couple of the plot twists, but the two main ones were a complete surprise. Honestly, those plot twists had me gagged and they're the reason for the high rating.

Concerning the writing: it could have used a little more editing. The writer continually switches between tenses. He uses some sayings wrong. There's also grammar and punctuation issues. Some of the worldbuilding is unclear
First it's said the "winners" of the Lottery get to choose their punishment, then it's said the population gets to vote what the punishment will be.
Spike's accent is not only irritating, it's also not consistent: in some places he says "da" and "den", in other places he says "the" and "then".  The commander's disdain for the Undesirables was soooo unsubtle.
