The Peach Keeper by Sarah Addison Allen

4.0

I've read a few of Ms. Allen's books, and this has been my favorite so far. While her books can sometimes come off as juvenile and predictable, I take them for what they are...light southern women's fiction. Is this gonna be a classic? No. Did I guess what the story behind Tucker Devlin and Georgie was almost as soon as he was discovered? Yes. Was I surprised that everyone's story wrapped up all nice and neat in a 'Happily ever after' kind of way? No. Regardless, I still enjoyed the story.

A couple things about the book DID irritated me a bit though. One was Paxton Osgood being a 30-year-old, supposedly intelligent woman, who still lived at home. I am a 30-year-old woman...not in a MILLION years could I picture myself or any of my friends still living with our parents (unless there was some kind of special circumstance). For someone so concerned with image, it was just weird.

The other thing that bothered me was the big veil of secrecy over Sebastian's sexuality. Why hide it? Why play games? KNOWING how Paxton felt about him he couldn't just tell her the truth? Willa and Colin were by far my favorite characters. They just seemed the most real to me. I thought the whole 'Willa as the Joker' thing got a little tired after a while (I mean, after all, these people are 30 now...high school was a long time ago), and it's those sections that made me think 'juvenile'.

Overall though, as a whole, I enjoyed the book. I liked the story behind the Walls of Water Women's Society, and I liked the friendship between Agatha and Georgie. In fact, I wish Ms. Allen had gone a little more in-depth with that part of the story. Even though I knew where the Tucker Devlin plot was going, I still liked reading about it. This is a quick read that you'll breeze through, perfect for the beach or a lazy weekend. Even though I didn't love it, I'm rounding up my 3 1/2 stars to 4 because I did find it tough to put down at times.
