This was a perfect escape during these past few days of…unpleasantness.

I liked the first book well enough, but I liked this one so much more! I like the heightened stakes without leaving the “realm” (👀) of cozy fantasy, and all of the new characters were pleasant additions in addition to the return of Reyna and Kianthe. I’m properly invested in their story and hope to see familiar faces and even more great characters in the eventual sequel!

And since I’m relatively new to reading queer fiction: it is so *nice* to escape into a world where people use preferred pronouns without hesitation and where queerness doesn’t need to be celebrated because it is *normal*. I am grateful to this book for so many things, but the normalization and open embrace of queerness is something that I so desperately wish for in the real world.
