I'd describe this as unsettling - not in a horror way, but in a way that our narrator doesn't really spell out things to the reader. You end up picking out more coherent details from overheard conversations and then start putting the story together but it's not spelled out explicitly by the end of the novel.

I'm definitely interested in discussing others' interpretation of the story.
