The Accidental Tourist by Anne Tyler

4.0

This was my revisit of Anne Tyler after a long break. I was reminded, though, why I love her writing so much. While the story is heart-wrenching with its analysis of a marriage in trouble, loss of young life, and painfully insulated characters, one cannot help but continue this journey. Tyler's narrative and character development drive the story (as they do in everything she writes). One is saddened, angered, and thrilled with each character in his/her turn. You end your journey with a mixture of satisfaction, confusion, and bewilderment. In an interview regarding this book, Tyler comments how she considered ending it differently. While I was inclined toward the alternate ending, I reflected further and realized that Tyler's approach was indeed the better one. That's why she is a genius storyteller.
