The Great Mental Models Volume 1: General Thinking Concepts by Shane Parrish, Rhiannon Beaubien

3.0

The book, as the name says, is about mental models. And why would you not want to better understand thinking, understanding and consequently have better results in life?

The book is a good summary, in crisp sections. The examples go along nicely, except for a few. Has good illustrations. However, it’s a little bit of a letdown after following the blog for a while. The concepts aren’t explained as in-depth as in the blog. Seems like a shallow introduction at some places. The author does redirect you to the blog in the introduction if you’d like to learn more about mental models. But I’d think a book should be the comprehensive piece than the blog.

I’m someone who takes off the dust jackets when I’m reading a hardcover. Although I like books with dust jackets in my shelf, I loved the cover of this book- without a dust jacket and a neat, crisp and apt illustration.

I’d recommend this book to someone who is new to the concept of mental models or for someone who needs a refresher. If you’ve already read other books on the subject, you can skip this. Or at the least, the blog would do you better than the book.
