I have very mixed feelings about this book. The first part is a 4+ star read for me, but the rest left me unsatisfied.

In this first part Kundera presents Parmenides and Nietzsches theories on wether living is light and heavy, which is compelling to follow. We also follow the love story of Tereza and Tomas where Kundera ties the philosophical theories to fiction in a somewhat creative way.

What he portrays in the first part he destroys with the writing and storyline of the rest of the book. There are multiple points in which I feel betrayed by Kundera.

I find the way he writes about women fairly pretentious; as if women belong to another species. I also feel as if all the women in this book were moulded off the same muse.

Kundera also has a tendency to get very repetitive. What was a funny and witty first read gets overused until it’s lost comical meaning.

I was skimming this book by the end, just wanting to get it over with. As much hype around this as I’ve seen I honestly was expecting an entirely different book (and outcome?).
